Project GATEWAY ushers in a new era of travel for the Quad Cities
The Quad Cities International Airport (MLI) is embarking on a transformation that will reshape the travel experience for residents, visitors and businesses across the region.
Known as Project GATEWAY, this long-term modernization initiative is reimagining the facility from the ground up, creating a more efficient, accessible and welcoming environment while positioning the airport to serve the region for decades to come.
The project reflects a significant investment in regional infrastructure and quality of life. The comprehensive plan includes major terminal renovations, enhanced passenger amenities and improvements designed to make travel easier and more enjoyable for everyone who passes through its doors.
The airport's landside terminal was last substantially updated in 1985. After 40 years of service, airport leaders recognized the need to reinvest in the region's aviation gateway.
Phase One of Project GATEWAY has already been completed, with an investment of $18 million, bringing all airline ticket counters together into a modern, streamlined ticketing lobby and moving critical security functions out of public circulation space. The updated layout creates a more seamless experience for travelers from the moment they enter the terminal and increased efficiency for TSA and airline partners.
Momentum continues to build with Phase Two, now underway. With an estimated investment of more than $19 million, Phase Two will take approximately 18 months to complete and will encompass nearly every space travelers encounter from the front entrance up to the security checkpoint entrance. Improvements include replacing the airport's iconic brown brick flooring with modern terrazzo surfaces, renovating restrooms to improve accessibility, adding nursing mothers suites and relocating public meeting spaces. Plans also include a new indoor-outdoor observation area, providing community members with a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of aviation whether they are traveling or just visiting the airport.
"The Quad Cities International Airport is often the first and last impression visitors have of our region. Investments like Project GATEWAY ensure we are providing a modern, accessible and welcoming experience that reflects the strength of our community while supporting the connectivity businesses need to compete and grow. A strong airport is a critical piece of economic infrastructure, helping attract investment, support workforce mobility, and keep the Quad Cities connected to opportunities across the country and around the world,” said Benjamin Leischner, A.A.E., Executive Director, Quad Cities International Airport.
Beyond aesthetic improvements, Project GATEWAY is focused on delivering a world-class travel experience centered on efficiency, comfort and convenience. The project aligns with the airport's mission to remain the most convenient airport option for travelers throughout the Quad Cities region.
Earlier this year, the airport announced SkyDine as its new concessionaire, bringing updated food and beverage options to travelers as part of the broader modernization effort.
"For businesses, residents and visitors, this investment represents more than a renovation. It's a commitment to strengthening one of the region's most important assets and ensuring the Quad Cities remains connected – nationally and internationally," said Peter Tokar III, President & CEO of the Quad Cities Chamber and Grow Quad Cities.
The airport serves as a critical transportation asset for the regional economy. Major carriers include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Allegiant Air providing nonstop service to 11 destinations and hubs, connecting travelers to Chicago, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver and popular vacation destinations. In addition to passenger travel, the airport's air freight services help businesses move products efficiently across the globe.
"The Quad Cities International Airport offers business travelers multiple connections through major hubs that help keep our region connected to customers, partners and opportunities worldwide," said Tami Petsche, Vice President of Business Attraction for Grow Quad Cities. "Convenience and accessibility are essential to supporting economic growth and a thriving business community."
