More than 7,200 small businesses keep the QC economy rolling
Next week, May 3 – 9, marks National Small Business Week -- a time to recognize the entrepreneurs and small business owners who keep local economies moving. In the QC, the impact of small business is not only visible, it’s measurable. And the numbers may surprise you.
“Across the six-county region, there are more than 7,200 businesses that qualify as small businesses (companies with 500 employees or less). That’s 87% of all businesses,” said James Porter, Vice President, Small & Minority Business at the Chamber. “Together these small businesses generate over $19 billion in revenue, accounting for a quarter of all business revenue in the region. They also support more than 74,000 jobs and contribute roughly $3 billion in annual payroll,” he said.
Drill down further, and the influence of truly small operations becomes even clearer. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees here in our region, more than 5,300 of them, generate over $4 billion in revenue and support 29,000 jobs.
“Those numbers reflect something bigger than data,” said Peter Tokar III, President & CEO of the Chamber. “They represent local ownership, risk-taking and a deep connection to the community.”
While recognition during National Small Business Week is important, support for small businesses in the Quad Cities extends year-round.
“The Chamber works alongside entrepreneurs through ribbon cuttings, milestone celebrations and grand openings,” added Tokar. “We’re proud to advocate for legislative policies that support our small businesses as well as provide resources to help these businesses grow and adapt.”
For locals and fellow businesses, supporting a small business doesn’t require a big lift, but it does make a difference.
Choosing a neighborhood coffee shop, contractor or retailer keeps dollars circulating in the region. Engaging with businesses online through reviews, shares or recommendations helps expand their reach. Even a simple word-of-mouth referral can open new doors.
Small businesses are a driving force behind the QC economy. And during National Small Business Week, there’s no better time to recognize their role in shaping the region.
