Larry Makoben posthumously named Chamber Volunteer of the Year
This year’s Volunteer of the Year award was posthumously presented to Larry Makoben, a longtime Chamber Ambassador and friend, who passed away in January. The award was accepted by his family.
Larry was a retired banker and a Chamber Ambassador for over 30 years, as well as serving as a Trailblazer with the Bettendorf Chamber. His career took him to Bettendorf Bank, Northwest Bank, Wells Fargo, and ultimately, IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union where he retired several years ago. A tireless volunteer, Larry devoted countless hours to the betterment of the Quad Cities and specifically to the City of Bettendorf where he was Chairman of the Park Board for 22 years, was a founding member of the Bettendorf Business Network and was on the Bettendorf Fourth of July Committee for 25 years. He was also an enthusiastic John Deere Classic volunteer and avid golfer, having a bench at Palmer Hills Golf Course dedicated in his honor this June.
Larry was devoted to the community he loved. “You would literally see Larry everywhere. He spent a lot of time giving his time and talents to the community,” said Bettendorf Mayor Bob Gallagher, who knew Larry for more than 25 years.
Tushar Patel, a local businessman and the Chair of the Chamber Ambassadors said, “Even in retirement, Larry actively participated in numerous community service volunteer activities, showcasing his admirable dedication to making a positive impact on the community."
Larry’s presence and positivity are greatly missed by the Chamber and the community. We are grateful for his friendship and for his many years of service.
