Iowa is facing challenges in terms of population growth and attracting talent, like most states across the U.S. But Debi Durham, Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) and the Iowa Finance Authority (IFA), said the state is embracing those challenges as opportunities and taking action.

During the Chamber’s recent Legislative Event Series, Durham discussed the economic climate and trends in Iowa, as well as the State’s focus on workforce attraction. In December 2021, there were 65,000 unemployed workers across the state yet 120,000 job openings. The labor force participation rate has dropped to 66.8% and most of those leaving the workforce are women ages 44-54 and young men.

Durham said Iowa is committed to creating a culture where families can thrive and is reaching outside the state to attract new residents. It is promoting tourism and investing in broadband, housing and placemaking initiatives to build a state and communities where people want live.
