Government shutdown ends
On Wednesday, November 12, President Trump signed legislation providing a temporary funding fix for the federal government, ending the shutdown.
As the holidays draw closer, delays and cancellations at airports and paused funding for social safety net programs increased pressure on legislators to come to a deal. The funding deal includes full-year funding for a number of different agencies, including full funding of SNAP benefits through September 2026. Also funded through September are the Department of Agriculture & FDA, the Department of Veterans Affairs, military construction projects and congressional operations.
The remainder of the 2026 Federal Fiscal Year budget, which officially began on October 1, must still be funded by January 30, 2026, to avoid a future funding lapse.
The deal came together when a group of eight Senate Democrats bucked Senate leadership and voted to approve the temporary funding bill. FAA-directed flight cancellations will continue for the short term until air traffic control staffing returns to an adequate level. Over the coming weeks, we can expect to see air travel return to relative normalcy.
