QC, That’s Where? That’s where innovation meets community roots to create lasting success. Two iconic Quad Cities companies, Electro Freeze and Nestlé Purina, exemplify this legacy.

Electro Freeze, a pioneer in frozen dessert equipment for over 80 years and Nestlé Purina, a global leader in pet nutrition with nearly a century in the QC, have built their success on the region's strategic advantages: a hardworking, skilled workforce, an abundant transportation network and a supportive community. From introducing industry-defining products to expanding into international markets, these companies have not only grown with the QC but have contributed to its economy and spirit of innovation.

“Our success starts with our people,” said Victoria Campbell, President and CEO of Electro Freeze. “The QC offers Midwestern values that align perfectly with our company culture. Our long history of loyal, dedicated employees has been instrumental in helping us grow and innovate in the frozen dessert equipment industry.”

According to Campbell, the Electro Freeze journey began because of another household name in frozen desserts: Dairy Queen. In 1946, Electro Freeze (then H.C. Duke), began designing machines for their soft serve ice cream. “Today we’re proud to have expanded into quick-service restaurants worldwide. While our core presence remains in North America, we also serve customers in the UK, Poland and China, providing high-quality machines that businesses can rely on to meet demand.”

With 188 talented employees, the company is still growing. Campbell says the Quad Cities offers an ideal business environment with competitive costs and qualified workers. “Many of our team members have dedicated their entire careers to Electro Freeze, with some serving for over 40 years. We celebrate their legacy and value their expertise, which has been critical to our success,” she said.

Innovation has always been at the heart of Electro Freeze. Over the decades the company has expanded its product line to meet industry trends, from shakes and hard-pack ice cream to the yogurt boom of the 2010s and now slushy and frozen cocktail machines. Campbell said customers rely on them for consistent, high-quality products and efficiency in their operations. Through it all, their mission remains the same: helping businesses and their customers “Taste the Difference” with Electro Freeze.

“The success and growth we’ve enjoyed wouldn’t be possible without the support of this amazing region, which is why giving back is so important to us,” said Campbell. She said Electro Freeze has supported local nonprofits like Dress for Success and ARC of the Quad Cities, as well as taking advantage of national sponsorship opportunities.

Like Electro Freeze, Nestlé Purina has thrived in the Quad Cities for nearly a century.

Erin Daniel, Manager of Facility HR, said the strategic location of the Davenport facility has been a significant factor in the company’s success.

“We have easy access to major highways, railways and the Mississippi River, which has been a huge advantage for us. We've been able to efficiently receive raw materials and distribute our products, thanks to the region's excellent transportation network, as well as the incredible resources of the Midwest. The shared commitment to quality and innovation between Nestlé Purina and the Quad Cities community has been crucial in our sustained success,” she said.

The company has a network of 20+ factories across the United States, allowing it to serve pet owners nationwide. Globally, it’s connected to a vast network of Nestlé facilities and research centers, enabling the company to leverage cutting-edge technology and innovation in pet nutrition.

“The Quad Cities offers a supportive and vibrant community for our workforce,” added Daniel. “The region provides a high quality of life, excellent schools, recreational opportunities and a strong sense of community. Our employees benefit from a stable and welcoming environment that encourages professional growth and personal development. The QCs strong work ethic and commitment to excellence align with Purina's values, making it an ideal location for our dedicated team of more than 500 employees.”

In addition to production, packaging and shipping, Nestle Purina’s Davenport facility plays a crucial role in innovation and product development. The company is constantly researching and developing new pet food formulations to meet the evolving needs of pets and their owners. A commitment to sustainability is also a key focus, as Nestlé Purina strives to reduce its environmental footprint through initiatives like reducing plastic use in packaging and improving energy efficiency. “Nestlé Purina is proud to be an integral part of the Quad Cities community and remains dedicated to contributing positively to the region's economic and social well-being,” said Daniel.

The enduring success of legacy businesses like Electro Freeze and Nestlé Purina showcases the region’s collaborative spirit, prime Midwest location and dedicated workforce. From revolutionizing industries to giving back to the community, they prove that in the QC, success is built on a strong foundation of people, progress and pride.
