Chamber responds to Moline State of the City address
Moline Mayor Sangeetha Rayapati presented the State of the City address on Monday, February 3.
"The mayor's theme, 'practical progress, positive growth' reflects the city’s many accomplishments in 2024, and sets the stage to tackle key issues in 2025 which align with the Chamber’s Legislative Agenda," said Ryan Sempf, Executive Director, Government Affairs for the Chamber.
Workforce, Talent & Amenities
Mayor Rayapati spoke extensively on the efforts Moline has undertaken to become a more attractive place to live, highlighting the City's progress in riverfront redevelopment, improvements to public spaces like Riverside Park and ongoing community engagement initiatives.
The Chamber is excited by the Mayor’s proposed revolving loan fund targeted toward entrepreneurs. We’re eager to learn more about the upcoming riverfront proposals and the City’s partnership with the Quad Cities Manufacturing Institute. We applaud Moline’s creative use of grants and incentives to accomplish these placemaking goals.
Infrastructure
The Mayor put a deserved spotlight on the City’s infrastructure successes in 2024. Moline has completed 11 miles of street reconstruction, has built out citywide broadband service and improved multimodal infrastructure with bike lanes and walking paths. The Chamber is proud to have worked with Moline and our partners at the State level in Illinois to bring a River Edge Redevelopment Zone to the Illinois Quad Cities, and we look forward to its full implementation as another valuable economic development tool. Additionally, we appreciate the Mayor’s continued commitment to bringing passenger rail service to the Quad Cities.
Housing
Mayor Rayapati correctly stated that Moline needs more housing. Moline faces a shortage of 1,100-4,400 units, depending on its growth trajectory over the next few years. We are thankful that the Mayor, City staff and City Council have shown a commitment to support housing development and reconfiguring City regulations to encourage more types of housing, such as accessory dwelling units.
