Chamber Reaction to Rock Island State of the City Address
Rock Island Mayor Mike Thoms presented the State of the City address on Tuesday, January 28. Thoms focused on themes of community partnership and downtown revitalization, issues of high importance for the business community, and that align with the Chamber’s 2025 Local Legislative Agenda.
“We are confident that Rock Island is working to set itself up for future success,” said Ryan Sempf, Executive Director of Government Affairs for the Chamber. "Their priorities align with our local legislative goals," he said.
Housing
Mayor Thoms made it clear in his address that Rock Island is serious about housing. The Chamber considers housing development a top local priority; as such, we are thrilled to see the City make a strategic plan for new housing development, use incentives to revitalize old housing stock and work with partners at the State and Federal level to encourage the creation of new and enhanced incentives for development.
Infrastructure
Thoms acknowledged the need to upgrade infrastructure, both to repair aging systems and to enhance the city's appeal. Recent grants, including RAISE and ARPA funds, will bring tens of millions of dollars to Rock Island, benefiting the entire Quad Cities region.
Workforce & Amenities
The Chamber is pleased with the City of Rock Island’s close partnership with the Rock Island Downtown Alliance (RIDA) and is elated about the continuing renovations including widening sidewalks, slowing traffic, supporting public art projects (such as the murals/beautification to Arts Alley) and promoting the use of public parks. By encouraging residents, prospective residents and visitors to spend more of their time downtown, Rock Island is making a direct investment in its workers, businesses and community at large. We are thankful that Mayor Thoms supports these downtown projects and encourage further collaboration and creativity in the development of downtown.
