Chamber opposes Dept. of Labor rule on exempt employees

Government Affairs update

The Quad Cities Chamber submitted written comments opposing the Department of Labor’s proposed rule to revise the regulations implementing the exemption of certain white-collar employees from minimum wage and overtime pay. Specifically, the proposal includes increasing the standard salary level generally required for exemption from $35,568 to $55,068.

We oppose the rule change, as it would lead to a significant amount of currently exempt (not eligible for overtime) employees being either reclassified as non-exempt (eligible for overtime) or require an increase in wages to move those employees above $55,068 per year. Wages are not the only threshold for exempt status, but are the easiest way to determine eligibility.
