Small- to medium-sized manufacturers invited to test common virtual workspace platform

The Quad Cities Manufacturing Innovation Hub is pleased to share this opportunity from the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), a world-class, first-of-its-kind manufacturing hub headquartered in Chicago. Its goal is to provide U.S. factories with the tools, software, and expertise they need to build things more efficiently, less expensively, and more quickly, so they can win more business and bring jobs back to the United States.

One such way is through the Digital Manufacturing Commons (DMC), an open-source, online platform for connecting communities and sharing solutions across the manufacturing product life cycle. It allows distributed teams to collaborate within a common virtual workspace by linking people, data, and tools.

The DMC’s content will range from software and applications to ‘pro tip’ videos and case studies and will be centered on helping manufacturers increase revenue and reduce costs. The underlying technologies and solutions will tie back to the DMDII’s main mission of transforming U.S. manufacturing through digital technologies. The content solutions will be very pragmatic, immediate and accessible. For example, solutions relating to ‘Improving Estimates, CNC and CMM Operations,’ among a range of other topics, will be addressed.

The DMC is currently in beta stage with plans to launch the first release in fourth quarter 2017. The DMDII team will be curating and uploading the content in the days and weeks ahead and as part of that process, they are seeking feedback from small to medium-sized manufacturers on whether the content is relevant, valuable, and accessible.

They are offering both a virtual (on-line, through emails and webinars) and in-person (through a User Group Feedback Session at UI LABS) opportunity to provide input and feedback on the DMC platform and content. The goal is to have SMMs use and test the DMC platform and provide real-time feedback on the value and impact the content could potentially have on their business.
