The Quad Cities Manufacturing Innovation Hub recently sat down with Brad Morrison, owner of Chamber member Riverbend Signworks, a local graphics and sign manufacturing company in Bettendorf, to talk about why he’s passionate about the Quad Cities Manufacturing Innovation Hub.
Why did you first become interested in the Hub?
I love manufacturing … I’ve always been a fan of the making of the ‘stuff.’ I’ve got a background in manufacturing, so I’m very familiar with lean, 5S, those sorts of principles. People always think of us as a sign company, but we’re really a manufacturing company that can help others in the business efficiency arena. We help others be found.
What do you see as the value of the Hub?
I love the Hub! I’m attracted to Chamber activities that involve community development – which is very important to me on a personal level – as well as small business marketing and manufacturing. With respect to manufacturing, I’m always interested in how we make ourselves more efficient. The Hub really focuses on helping connect second-tier manufacturers. What I love about going to the activities is that it has a combined brain effect: if you get enough of us in the room, we’re going to have more knowledge as a group versus individually. And that’s what we need – a concerted, collective effort to improve our manufacturing abilities.
What have you learned so far?
For me, it isn’t just about the networking for business leads, it’s finding out who has resources, who can share knowledge. Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know. But having multiple people in the room allows you take advantage of synergy.
Why do you think others should get involved?
If we really want to get better, it’s hard to do that without other outside knowledge. When business becomes better for one, we ALL get better because the economy is better. It’s the old saying, “ a rising tide lifts all boats.” If the tide level improves for one, it improves for all of the boats.
