What’s it like to be a Big with Big Brothers Big Sisters in the Quad Cities?
If you’re like many people, you have heard of Big Brothers Big Sisters, but you aren’t exactly sure what all it means to become a “Big”. You might even know that Big Brothers or Big Sisters are mentors to an area youth, but that word- mentor- seems a little ambiguous. So, what does it mean to be a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters?
Bigs have a few main roles: be a trusted adult friend, have fun, be a positive role model, have fun, be a nurturer of possibilities, and…have fun. Looking back to your childhood, it’s likely that you can think of someone who played each of these roles for you. Someone who spent one-on-one time with you doing activities you were interested in, talked to you about goals, friendships, and the challenges of being a kid, exposed you to new things, encouraged you to build on your strengths, and, together, you HAD FUN. A mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters does that exact same thing. Being a Big means hanging out with a child who wants and needs someone to talk to- sharing experiences, exploring new interests, and as you spend time learning about each other, the mentoring happens.
Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley has about 250 kids on our waiting list. About 75% of these youth are boys. We need more people, like you, to spend time with one of these Littles, especially if you’re a guy!
Want to give it a try? On January 30, 2018, from 5:30-7:30, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley holds one of its largest group activities for Bigs and Littles: Match Night at Putt-A-Round. Putt-A-Round is an indoor miniature golf course, held at the River Center, with unique mini-golf holes created by about 25 local businesses. You are invited to come to this event, along with about 200 other Bigs and Littles, and spend the evening playing through the course with a child from our waiting list. You can learn first-hand what it’s like to be a Big, and have the opportunity to talk to others who are already Bigs.
Please contact Sarah Walker, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 563-323-8006, to learn more about this opportunity. RSVP required by January 15, 2018.
