AJ Loss, President of Bush Construction, was a young professional when he started at the commercial building arm of the McCarthy-Bush Corporation. During his seven year tenure at Bush, he has seen monumental growth for the company, recently named the third fastest growing private company in the state of Iowa by Inc. Magazine.
Bush Construction has carried on the tradition of Patrick F. McCarthy, who founded the McCarthy Improvement Company in 1897. The company has been part of many local icons including WIU-Quad Cities Campus, Davenport’s Eastern Avenue Branch Public Library, the foundation of the Centennial Bridge, the upper floors of the Hotel Blackhawk, the lock and dams up and down the Mississippi River, and soon the Riverwatch Place.
The company mantra, "building on a foundation of integrity” is reinforced by Bush’s dedication to community service. The company hosts four community involvement events, a mentorship program between new hires and senior level employees, and in-house training sessions dubbed Bush University that teach foundational skills that also can serve as a refresher.
"We have highly educated employees, but if you don’t see something for six months or a year you run the risk of forgetting it,” Loss says.
The training sessions of Bush University differ from month to month ranging from webinars to visits from industry professionals and vendors.
