Last week's Chamber Board meeting featured a discussion of the Rock Island Arsenal and the importance of business and community leaders continuing to build awareness of the island's critical role in national defense and the regional economy. Major General (ret) Yves Fontaine encouraged Chamber leaders to stay focused on advancing understanding of the value of the Arsenal, working with local commanders, improving community partnerships with the Arsenal, and inviting Congressional leaders to the Quad Cities. As the Department of Defense makes plans to scale back operations across the country, the Quad Cities is advised to be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding workload, functions, and commands currently located at the Arsenal. General Fontaine noted that the Chamber is actively participating in a statewide task force in Illinois aimed at raising awareness of our military installations, and has been working with state officials in Iowa to create a parallel task force so that advocacy for the Arsenal extends beyond our local community.
